Thanks, News & Days of the Week

Congratulations and a huge thank you to CQ, BP & RB for their lovely performances at the SummerDance Festival, making "Whispers Across Seas.....a Beacon From Beyond" beautiful. I was standing at the back today imagining the light design for performance in a theatre!......Also a big well done to Victoria and Creator DT for their performance. I was very proud of my "ballet girl" HG!

As many of you have already heard I will be teaching a couple of classes at The School of Dance in September. Details later and yes I will be continuing many of my regular classes while I am still here.

So on to this week... I am excited about ' The Days of the Week" Session. Schedule and fees are in the previous post below so.....see you in class!

"By The Days of the Week" Session July30-August 18

Here are the details about "The Days of the Week" Session.

Performer and teacher Enrico Cecchetti created a system of study rooted a strong technical barre. Featuring beautifully co-oridinated Ports de Bras, Centre Practice , adages (emphasizing both control & line with quality of movement) and of course the numerous Pirouettes and  Allegros (all of varying styles and moods), Cecchetti provided the dancer with a broad method of training. This vast body of material was assigned to the various days of the week in an effort to ensure all types of steps were studied consistently.

I am excited to offer these classes based on the tradition of Cecchetti. The classes will start with a free barre incorporating the principles of this legacy. Centre will follow the pattern of exercises laid out for each day, showing the brilliant variety of material that is based on the development of a strong technique emphasizing alignment with core control enabling dancers to develop flow of movement, performance and a dynamic use of space.

Dancers should be at the Cecchetti Intermediate level as a minimum requirement. It is not necessary that dancers have taken exams or have previous training in the method . Experience with the work would be an asset but I invite any dancer able to participate at the class level. Dancers and teachers are welcome . Classes will begin with a free barre free work based on the Cecchetti  principles of classical dance and include  material from the Advanced levels through to Diploma.

I hope you will join me as we explore this rich collection of Pirouettes,Adages, Enchainements and Travelling Turning steps!

For those of you who haven't visited the school in Mount Pearl , it is located on Barbour Drive, in the Town Square Mini Mall, 2nd floor. If you are coming from St. John's on Pitts Memorial Drive you exit at the 2nd Mount  Pearl exit,  Ruby Line. Continue past Tim Horton's and straight through the lights at Old Placentia Road. Continue, you will see the building on the left.  If you need more info or directions using a different route let me know. There is also public transit. From the centre and east end of St. John's  take routes 1,2 and 3 and transfer at The Village Mall to either route 20 or 21. You need to co-ordinate your rides to arrive at the Village on the half hour to connect with the Mount Pearl buses. Route 21 wanders through Mount Pearl to eventually go down Ruby Line and turn onto Jackman Drive which is immediately behind the school. Route 20 takes a more direct route but you must get off at the stop where Old Placentia Road intersects with Ruby Line ( right before Shopper's, Bulk Barn and Tim's) and take the short walk down Ruby Line to the school.

If you have questions or need additional info contact me by e mail. Please share this information with others who love to dance and I look forward to seeing you all in class!

SummerDance Pippy Park July 28 & 29

Here is info about our piece we will be performing this week end in the SummerDance Festival. Performance times are between 2 & 4 each day. There are a variety of other groups performing as well.

A new work in three movements by Sandra Blackmore, " Whispers Across Seas.....a Beacon From Beyond," is contemporary in movement and energy, yet draws on the strength of classical technique.

Beginning with a Celtic inspired contemporary composition by Kim Robertson, this dance continues with two contrasting pieces by Secret Garden highlighting their pan European evocative voice.

Featuring both group and solo passages, the dance showcases the talents of Colleen Quigley, Beth Pardy and Robyn Breen.

Sandra Blackmore has been a teacher and performer in the province for many years and has worked with numerous dance and theatre groups. Having worked primarily at her own studio for some 25 years, Sandra has also been in demand as a guest teacher and choreographer. She served on the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council as dance representative and Chairperson from 1998 - 2004.
Sandra is presently preparing for new adventures, that will divide her time between 'South of the Border" , Toronto. and Newfoundland.

All three dancers are departing to Toronto in September to further their dance studies. Colleen will be attending U of T, doing her Masters in Archives with a special interest in preserving dance history. Beth is currently excelling in the Teacher Training Program at the National Ballet School, and Robyn is venturing to York University in pursuit of an undergraduate degree in dance.

Please forward or otherwise share this info with anyone who enjoys dance!

Weekly Update & SummerDance Performance

Well it is Sunday and finally sunny after all the rain! I hope you are enjoying an afternoon outside.

I have had some response and wondering if anyone else out there would be interested in performing in a new piece by me for the SummerDance July 28 & 29. Performance time would be between 2-4! The choreography would be a modern ballet style It looks like I be here in St. John's on the 28 & 29 of July so this may be fun. Costume/expenses would be reasonable as I think I have some parts suitable that have not already gone to the VV. Hopefully you may have other bits .

The venue is the stage next to the Fluvarium in Pippy Park.

This means that there will most likely be an additional week of classes.

If you are in reasonable shape or could be by the end of the month it would I would love to have you to dance! Let me know your interest and I will explore this possibility further.... as always , share this with others..

If you need to check the schedule, locations and/or price ,scroll down and check the Summer Session post . I am also hoping that those who my need rides will be connect with others in our group.

So looking forward to seeing you in class!

Rides To Mount Pearl

Hi all, Trying to co-ordinate transportation to Mount Pearl, dancers are looking for rides to "the Pearl". Let me know if you are able to help in setting up some sort of car pool???? Also if could indicate if it would be OK to pass on your contact info to other dancers that would be great.
Also there is public transit, dubbed last season by CQ as the "People's Chariot" & "the 40 foot Limo" ! From the east end or downtown you take route 3 and transfer at the Village Mall to Route 21 which wanders through "the Pearl" passing by the studio or the new route 20 also from the Village . On route 20 you get off at the Ruby Line stop and walk down to the studio.

Hopes this helps and I will see you in class....
